Junior Horticulture ID Rules
Register before September 22, 2025
This activity will help train younger participants for competition at National level. They
will learn to identify flowers, indoor plants, fruits, nuts and berries, landscape
ornamentals and vegetables. They will also learn how to judge plants and
answer a few horticultural knowledge questions.
Rules:
The contest has 2 divisions -
9-11 Junior
12-14 Intermediate
If a participant needs assistance, please notify the project chair in advance of competition. NJHA age is determined as of your age of December 31 of the end of this year.
Contest Format:
The contest consists of 3 sections:
Identification – Judging – True/False Questions
After activity, the items placed for ID will be on display with identification.
Judging:
Junior Division - two (2) classes of 4 plates will be judged on the basis of condition, quality, uniformity, true-to-type, and size.
Intermediate Division - three (3) classes of 4 plates using the same above criteria.
Information:
True/False and multiple choice questions will be taken from information in the current horticulture study manual and/or informtion on this section of the website.
Identification:
Samples will be taken from a smaller select group of specimens designed for younger participants in each of the fouir (4)
commodity groups (see plant list under "Study Materials" tab, under Categories).
Specimens may be alive, pressed or dried.
Awards
First, second, and third placings will be awarded in each age division.
